Unit Policy
Introduction
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to outline the services and privileges offered to retired School of Nursing (SON) faculty and staff. It is set forth with the intention of fostering continued communication and engagement, to assist with faculty and staff transitions to retirement and in appreciation of a retiree's years of service and value to our school.
For information regarding University services and privileges offered to retirees such as maintaining affiliate status, PID, and One Card privileges (including library access), retiree parking, online campus directory, and Tar Heel Discounts and Perks, please visit the University's Office of Human Resources "Retirement" page.
Scope of Applicability
This policy applies to SON faculty and staff who are planning to retire or who have retired. The services offered apply to both faculty and staff unless otherwise specified in the policy.
Policy
SON Retired Faculty and Staff Listserv
The SON Office of Advancement maintains a listserv of all retired faculty and staff for the purpose of informing and inviting retirees to SON events. Membership on this listserv is automatically granted upon retirement and does not need to be requested. Retirees who do not wish to receive these emails may opt out of this listserv by sending a request to the Associate Dean for Advancement.
Shared Drive Folders
Retired SON faculty members can request to maintain access to all onyen-accessible software and storage services (OneDrive, MS Teams, etc).
Office Space
Upon request, a retired faculty member will be given access to the SON community retirement office for continued engagement with colleagues and students. The office includes shared desk space, shared desktop computers, and a limited amount of storage space. The Associate Dean for Administration will serve as the retired faculty member's contact person regarding their desires for access to the community retirement office prior to transitioning out of their faculty office.
Requests for research space should be submitted to the Director of the Office of Research Support and Consultation (RSC) for consideration.
Mailboxes
In order to ease with the transition, retired SON faculty members can request to maintain their SON faculty mailbox/mail folder in the SON mailroom (Carrington Hall room L800) for up to six months after their retirement date. The retired faculty member should retrieve mail from their SON faculty mailbox/mail folder regularly and arrange for changes of address during this six month transitional period. Specific requests to maintain a SON faculty mailbox/mail folder should be made to the respective Division Manager, the contact person for faculty mail.
SON Webpage
Retired faculty members will be listed in the SON online directory under a sub-section of the faculty section. If a retired faculty member does not want to be included on this list, they must notify the webmaster.
