Department of Ophthalmology: Policy on Faculty Leave
Introduction
Purpose
The purpose of the faculty leave policy is to ensure that Department faculty are provided opportunities to utilize leave while ensuring that the Department is able to maintain necessary staffing to meet operational requirements.

All faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology.

Policy Statement
It is the policy of the Department to provide the utmost flexibility and accommodation to faculty requesting leave while balancing the staffing needs and patient care operations of the Department.
Types of Leave
- Standard Leave
- Please see the UNC HR Benefits webpage for standard leave types and University policies surrounding their use and accrual, since the policy differs based on date of hire. All standard leave types are based on the calendar year (January 1 through December 31).
- Professional Travel (PT)
- In addition to the standard leave types, the Department of Ophthalmology provides 10 days of Professional Travel leave per Fiscal Year (July 1 to June 30) for full-time faculty, pro-rated for part-time faculty.
- Any additional days of Professional Travel taken beyond a faculty member’s allotted time will be taken out of vacation leave.
- Mission trips with a resident that have been approved by the Chair and Residency Program Director are logged as Professional Travel but do not count against a faculty member’s allotted time.
