School of Medicine: Procedure for Dissemination of School of Medicine Competencies and Enabling Competencies

Introduction

Purpose

This Procedure provides the requirements and guidelines for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ("University") School of Medicine's (SOM) dissemination of competencies and enabling competencies in accordance with the phases of the curriculum. By implementing specific dissemination paths during each phase, the SOM can ensure that all students, faculty, preceptors, residents and fellows receive and are informed about the school competencies, enabling competencies and learning objectives for each required learning experience.

Scope

This Procedure is applicable to all faculty and staff in the SOM responsible for dissemination of competencies, enabling competencies and learning objectives and to all faculty, staff, preceptors, fellows and residents requiring access to competencies, enabling competencies and learning objectives.

Procedure

Dissemination of school competencies, enabling competencies and learning objectives will occur in accordance with each phase of the SOM curriculum as follows:

Foundation Phase

  1. The course competencies, enabling competencies and learning objectives are placed on Canvas, the SOM’s adopted learning management system, for students, faculty and residents to access and are updated as necessary.
  2. Each course director will verbally review the competencies, enabling competencies, and learning objectives at the start of each course with students.

Application Phase

  1. The competencies, enabling competencies and learning objectives are placed on Canvas for students, faculty, preceptors and residents to access and are updated as necessary.
  2. Each course director will conduct a mandatory in-person orientation session at the start of each course to verbally review competencies, enabling competencies, and learning objectives with students.

Individualization Phase

  1. The course competencies, enabling competencies and learning objectives are placed on Canvas for students, faculty, preceptors and residents to access and are updated as necessary.
  2. For courses requiring a mandatory in-person orientation session for students, course directors will review competencies, enabling competencies and learning objectives verbally with students during orientation.
  3. For courses where no in-person orientation is conducted for students, students are required to electronically acknowledge the course competencies, enabling competencies and learning objectives through an educational module or electronic survey instrument. Students will be informed of the required acknowledgement process at the start of the course, as applicable.

Definitions

Foundation Phase: The first eighteen (18) months of the medical school curriculum comprised of:

  • Nine (9) Medical Science courses (three per semester)
  • Three (3) semesters of Patient Centered Care (PCC)
  • Three (3) semesters of Social and Health Systems (SHS)

Application Phase: The 12-month phase of the medical school curriculum dedicated to core clinical experiences, beginning in March  and ending in February of the following, year consisting of:

  • Three (3) clinical courses:
    • Care of Specific Populations
    • Community Based Longitudinal Care
    • Hospital, Interventional, and Surgical Care
  • One (1) longitudinal course:
    • Social and Health Systems 4

Individualization Phase: The final (fourteen) 14 months of the medical school curriculum dedicated to the completion of graduation requirements and electives tailored to a student’s career interest, beginning in March and ending in May of the following year consisting of:

  • Two (2) Acting Internships
  • One (1) Critical Care Selective
  • One (1) Advanced Clinical Selective
  • Four (4) Electives
  • Two (2) longitudinal courses:
    • Science of Medicine and Social and Health Systems 5
    • Transition to Residency (to be completed at the end of the phase
