School of Medicine: Policy on Evaluation of School Competencies and Enabling Competencies

Introduction

Purpose

This Policy outlines the requirements for the establishment of an evaluation cycle for the review of the School of Medicine’s student competencies and enabling competencies based on the School of Medicine’s curriculum and education phases.

Scope

This Policy is applicable to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ("University") School of Medicine (SOM) faculty, staff and associated phase and education committee members responsible for and participating in evaluation and review initiatives for medical student competencies, curriculum and programs.

Policy

Policy Statement

To ensure the continual monitoring, review and revision of SOM’s competencies, enabling competencies and learning objectives and for the evaluation of key process measures and the establishment of annual goals, an evaluation cycle and schedule are established for each phase of the curriculum. This Policy provides the general requirements of the evaluation cycle.

General Requirements

  • A comprehensive review and evaluation will be conducted for each of the SOM’s Foundation, Application and Individualization Phases and for the SOM’s full education program in accordance with phase and academic year schedules and cycles.
  • The Foundation, Application and Individualization Phase Committees and the SOM’s Education Committee will meet, as applicable, to conduct evaluations, review curriculum and assess the phases and program.
  • Reports will be prepared and disseminated as necessary upon completion of evaluation processes and procedures.
  • The timelines, schedules and requirements for the Foundation, Application and Individualization Phase reviews and for the SOM’s education program review are provided in the Office of Medical Student Education Unit Procedure, Evaluation of School Competencies and Enabling Competencies.    

Definitions

Foundation Phase: The first eighteen (18) months of the medical school curriculum comprised of:

  • Nine (9) Medical Science courses (three per semester)
  • Three (3) semesters of Patient Centered Care (PCC)
  • Three (3) semesters of Social and Health Systems (SHS)

Application Phase: The 12-month phase of the medical school curriculum dedicated to core clinical experiences, beginning in March and ending in February of the following year consisting of:

  • Three (3) clinical courses:
    • Care of Specific Populations
    • Community Based Longitudinal Care
    • Hospital, Interventional, and Surgical Care
  • One (1) longitudinal course:
    • Social and Health Systems 4

Individualization Phase: The final fourteen (14) months of the medical school curriculum dedicated to the completion of graduation requirements and electives tailored to a student’s career interest, beginning in March and ending in May of the following year consisting of:

  • Two (2) Acting Internships
  • One (1) Critical Care Selective
  • One (1) Advanced Clinical Selective
  • Four (4) Electives
  • Two (2) longitudinal courses:
    • Science of Medicine and Social and Health Systems 5
    • Transition to Residency (to be completed at the end of the phase)
