Offices of Medical Student Education: Policy on Resident and Fellow Preparation for Teaching in the Medical Doctorate Degree Program
Introduction
Purpose
This Policy outlines the mechanisms by which residents and fellows who supervise and/or assess medical students (“Students”) in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (“University”) School of Medicine’s (SOM) Medical Doctorate degree (MD) program (“Program”) learn about the Program’s objectives, learning objectives for their specific course or clerkship, the required clinical encounters and skills they will be supervising and/or assessing, SOM and/or Program policies, and basic teaching and assessment practices consistent with the standards of the Program.
Scope
This Policy applies to residents and fellows who supervise/assess Students.

Policy Statement
Residents and fellows at UNC Hospitals and affiliated clinical sites are prepared to supervise, teach, and assess Students through the following institutional mechanisms:
- One (1) annual required module taken through the Program’s training platform, Articulate, and tracked by the Offices of Medical Student Education;
- Annual clerkship/course director communications via departmental meeting and/or email; and
- One (1) annual message from the SOM’s Sr. Associate Dean for Medical Student Education.
Content conveyed through these mechanisms includes:
- Program objectives;
- Course learning objectives, required clinical encounters and skills, and assessment methods;
- Key policies; and
- Basic teaching methods.
In addition to institutional training, SOM clinical departments offer their own training opportunities.
Resident participation in the annual training module is reviewed annually by the Education Committee.
