Department of Orthopaedics: Policy on Faculty Moonlighting
Introduction
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to define Faculty Moonlighting.
Scope
This policy applies to all Department of Orthopaedics faculty.
Policy
Policy Statement
Faculty are permitted to participate in moonlighting activities that comply with the UNC Faculty Practice Policy on moonlighting permissible activities. These activities are defined as medical-legal or clinical activities. For the Department of Orthopedics, only medical-legal activities are approved and include the following:
- Expert Witness Testimonials
- Independent Medical Exams
Moonlighting for clinical activity is not currently approved in the department and should be reviewed with the Chair. All external activities must be pre-approved by the Chair by submitting a request through the AIR system.
Moonlighting activities must not be completed using university resources. Faculty must be mindful of the restrictions below that are outlined in appendices to the UNC FP Faculty Affairs Code:
Restrictions on Medicolegal Activities (Expert Witness, Independent Medical Exam)
- Must not use university staff to schedule or coordinate testimonials
- University property cannot be used for video recording of testimonials
- Activity is not covered by university malpractice
- Faculty members assume responsibility all contracting and billing
Restrictions on Clinical Moonlighting (not currently approved)
- Must not use university staff to schedule or coordinate IME visits
- Any required physical exams cannot be conducted on university premises
- Activity is not covered by university malpractice
- Faculty members assume responsibility for all contracts and billing
- Must complete the Mayo Wellness Index, 3 months prior to starting the moonlighting activity
- Must have 8 hours rest between the end of moonlighting and returning to work
- Must have signed the FP Terms and Conditions on-compete and not conduct the business within the radius of the non-compete.
If a faculty member is unable or unwilling to meet these conditions, the moonlighting activity can be conducted under the umbrella of the university, and the department will assume all associated contracting and revenue.
All activity must be submitted in the AIR system for approval by the Department Chair.
Exemptions should be requested from the Department Chair in writing, stating the reason for the exemption and expected duration. For alternative education sessions, the method of recording attendance should be noted, and records should be sent to the Education Coordinator monthly.
