Department of Orthopaedics: Policy on Clinic Staff Career Development

Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to define the requirements for Clinic Staff Development.
Scope
This policy applies to all Department of Orthopaedics Clinic Staff (UNCH Employed).
Policy
Policy Statement
The Department of Orthopaedics provides educational support for the employees working in its outpatient clinics. The purpose is to support the continued education and career development of support staff that serve patients.
The UNC Healthcare System employs clinical staff, but the UNC School of Medicine provides this funding to support licensure and CEUs for its licensed staff above and beyond the support provided by the healthcare system.
The department will support educational expenses as listed in this policy for each employee type. In addition, the department will support other educational activities by application to the Director of Clinical Operations.
The department will provide support for the following expenses for clinic support staff.
Registered Nurses
The following expenses will be allowable for Registered Nurses:
- North Carolina License renewal
- Recertification of Orthopaedics Nurse Certification
- Access to online CEU Credits (up to $200)
- Membership Renewal to NAON
Athletic Trainers
The following expenses will be allowable for Registered Nurses:
The following expenses will be allowable for Athletic Trainers
- North Carolina License Renewal
- Certification Renewal
- Access to online CEU Credits (up to $200)
- Membership Renewal in NATA
- Membership in ATPPS
Orthopaedic Technicians
The following expenses will be allowable for Ortho Techs
- Certification Renewal
- Access to online CEU Credits (up to $200)
Orthopaedic Fitters
The following expenses will be allowable for Ortho Fitters
- Certification Renewal
- Access to online CEU Credits (up to $200)
Certified Medical Assistant
The following expenses will be allowable for Certified Medical Assistants:
- Certification Renewal
- Access to online CEU Credits (up to $200)
Additional Education and Travel Awards
The department will provide additional education and travel awards for clinical staff, per the guidelines below. There is a limited fund available to support this education and will require approval of the Director of Clinical Operations
- Clinic staff wishing to purchase additional educational resources or travel to an educational conference
- Meetings must enhance the reputation of the department either through active participation in committees or submission of an abstract/poster
- OR adds significant educational value to the individual that will improve skills and knowledge for the benefit of the department
- Grant amount: Up to $1,500 (limited to one application per staff member per year)
