School of Nursing: Standard On Joint Primary & Secondary Departmental Appointments

Unit Standard

Title

School of Nursing: Standard On Joint Primary & Secondary Departmental Appointments

Introduction

Purpose

Divisions in the School of Nursing represent substantive areas of study in nursing. One goal of divisions is to have the appropriate compliment of faculty to meet teaching and research missions and responsibilities. This standard is intended to clarify when joint appointments may be appropriate and initiated.

Scope

This standard is intended for School of Nursing faculty. The majority of teaching and research responsibilities for many faculty will be related to only one division and a primary appointment in one division will meet their individual needs as well as school and division needs. Some faculty, however, may assume significant teaching and/or research responsibilities in more than one division or department; for these faculty, a joint appointment in two divisions/departments, with one division/department designated as the primary division/department, may be in the best interest of both the faculty and divisions/departments involved.

Standard

A joint appointment may be initiated by a faculty member desiring an appointment in another division/department or by a divsion/department associate dean/chair desiring to offer an appointment to a faculty member in another division/department. An agreement between the faculty member and the associate dean/chair of both the primary and secondary divisions/departments is necessary before a joint appointment is confirmed. Just as primary divisional/departmental appointments are based on defined teaching and research activities related to the home division/department, so are joint appointments. The joint appointment agreement must specify the faculty member's division of responsibility in each division/department and the terms of the appointment. Responsibility for faculty evaluation and recommendations for merit and reappointment/promotion rests with the associate dean/chair of the primary division/department, with input from the associate dean/chair of the secondary division/department.
