Policy Statement

The decision to close a course to enrollment is dependent on balancing many factors including faculty workloads, budgetary considerations, required course as opposed to elective course, frequency of course offerings as reflected in the approved course map, and efficient student progression, among other factors. If faculty want to propose closing enrollment in a course for any reason, they must discuss this with the appropriate program Assistant Dean before advisement and registration begin for the involved semester. The Assistant Dean, in consultation with the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, will make the final decision. In cases where mediation is needed, the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will make the final decision. Likewise, when a program is considering closing a course for any given term, the program Assistant Dean will consult with the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The program Assistant Dean will inform the SON Assistant Dean for Student Affairs when the decision to close enrollment in a specific course has been made.
