Adams School of Dentistry: Policy on Use of Recorded Lectures and Copyrighted Materials

Unit Policy

I. Introduction

A. Purpose

The purpose of this Policy is to outline expectations for student use of copyrighted materials and other intellectual property of the University, creators, and inventors.

B. Scope of Applicability

This Policy applies to all Adams School of Dentistry (ASOD) students and residents (referred to collectively as "Students" for purposes of this Policy).

II. Policy

A. Policy Statement

Students must respect the intellectual property rights of faculty members and other creators of protected works and inventions. Any violation of this expectation may result in disciplinary action against the student.

B. Course Materials

In accordance with the UNC-Chapel Hill Copyright Policy, faculty members retain intellectual property rights to the works they have created for their courses, such as lecture slides. These materials may be distributed to students for the sole purpose of enhancing their understanding of the concepts discussed. Accordingly, students are prohibited from using or distributing these materials for commercial purposes or in any other manner that violates the University's Copyright Policy or intellectual property law. Student Works that constitute notes of classroom and laboratory lectures and exercises must not be used for commercial purposes by the student generating such notes.

C. Recording Lectures

With the exception of ASOD-endorsed technology (e.g., lecture capture posted on Sakai or other medium), electronic recording of any lecture, seminar, or other instructional activity, including exams (posted or not), occurring as part of the dental curriculum is generally prohibited. If the student needs to record lectures as a result of a disability, the student must be approved for accommodations by UNC-Chapel Hill's Accessibility Resources & Service prior to recording the lectures.
