Title

Offices of Medical Student Education: Policy on Resolving Disputes Regarding Violations of Educational Policies

Introduction

Purpose

This Policy establishes the authority and mechanism for resolving disputes regarding purported violations of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ("University") School of Medicine (SOM) Medical Doctorate degree (MD) program's ("Program") Educational Policies.

Scope

This Policy applies to the Program's students ("Students") in all Phases of the Program's curriculum and at all regional campuses/sites.

Policy

Any Dispute concerning a Student's purported violation of an Educational Policy must be resolved by the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Student Education (SAD-MSE). To request that a Dispute be resolved in their favor, a Student must submit a written request to the SAD-MSE via email. The request must include:

  • A description of the Student's Dispute containing reference to the Educational Policy(ies) the student has been claimed to have violated; and
  • Information which supports the Student's claim that the Student did not, in fact, violate such Educational Policy(ies).

The SAD-MSE will seek appropriate consultation and advice as the SAD-MSE deems necessary when deciding whether to grant or deny a Student's request. The SAD-MSE will communicate their decision to the Student in writing via email. This decision will be considered final and therefore will not be subject to appeal.

Definitions

Educational Policies: OMSE policies that govern the design, delivery, assessment, and oversight of the Program.

Dispute: For the purposes of this Policy, this refers to a Student's disagreement with a determination that the Student has violated an Educational Policy.
