Department of Family Medicine: Policy on Over-Grid Faculty

Unit Policy

Title

Department of Family Medicine: Policy on Over-Grid Faculty

Introduction

Purpose

To balance faculty opportunities for entrepreneurial and opportunistic new responsibilities with the need to avoid burnout and unsustainable expectations.

Scope

Faculty in the Department of Family Medicine who have greater than 1.05 FTE in responsibilities according to the Grid.

Policy

Policy Statement

Taking on responsibilities that result in a Grid total of over 1.05 FTE (“over-gridding”) is discouraged.  However, if a faculty member desires this, they may be compensated at their salaried rate for 50% of the FTE over 1.0. The department policy on Unbudgeted Opportunities within a Fiscal Year may be applicable.

The extra payments for over-gridding are made at the end of the academic year.

New grant and outside contract support provides academic incentive and helps develop faculty careers. If the new support is related to an internal (inside the department) leadership position, support first must go to cover the department funded non-clinical time before over-grid is considered (i.e. one cannot be over-gridded with department-funded activities).

Recipients of NIH grants cannot be over-gridded.

Definitions

  • Grid - The department’s faculty time management spreadsheet, which details each faculty member’s responsibilities and corresponding FTE.
