Department of Health Sciences: Policy on After-Hours Beach Café Study Space
Introduction
Purpose
The purpose of this Policy is to establish expectations for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (“University”) Department of Health Sciences (“DHS”) student (“Student/s”) use of the Beach Café study space outside of Normal Operating Hours for academic study.
Scope
This Policy applies to all Students who have been granted After-Hours access to the Beach Café study space. It applies only outside of the Beach Café’s Normal Operating Hours, when the space is closed for regular dining operations.

Policy Statement
The DHS is committed to promoting safety, cleanliness, and responsible use of communal spaces. In furtherance of this commitment, the DHS has established the guidelines below regarding Students’ After-Hours use of the Beach Café study space:
Access & Security
Students are encouraged to report situations or occurrences that could negatively impact, or have negatively impacted, the safety of the Beach Café study space. To assist in maintaining the safety of the study space:
- Only Students who have been authorized with School of Medicine ID Badge-access to the Beach Café may enter it After Hours.
- Students may not allow entry to friends, classmates, or any other individuals who are not authorized to enter the Beach Café.
- Students must not prop Beach Café doors open or admit anyone into the Beach Café who knocks or requests entry.
- Students must keep their Beach Café access credentials (e.g., key cards, codes) secure and may not share them with other individuals.
- Students must immediately report to campus security any suspicious behavior or security concern, such as, but not limited to:
- Unauthorized Individuals attempting to access locked or restricted areas;
- Unattended bags or items that appear out of place or concerning;
- Vandalism or intentional damage to dining hall property;
- Aggressive, threatening, or disruptive behavior;
- Unauthorized individuals remaining in the space after hours;
- Evidence of alcohol or drug use in the facility; or
- Tampering with security equipment, alarms, or locks.
Appropriate Use of Space
- Students may use the Beach Café for academic study purposes only.
- Students are not permitted to have parties, social gatherings, or engage in nonacademic activities in the Beach Café.
- Students must keep their noise levels reasonable and respectful of others using the Beach Café study space.
- Students should not move Beach Café furniture unless necessary and must return it to its original arrangement before departure from the study space.
- Students must use Beach Café equipment, furniture, and outlets responsibly. Students should report any damage to such items promptly to the Administrative Director of Student Affairs or the Executive Assistant to the DHS Chair via email.
Cleanliness & Personal Responsibility
- Students are responsible for cleaning up all of their food, trash, and personal belongings before leaving the Beach Café.
- Students must wipe down tables and chairs after use and dispose of their trash and recycling in the appropriate receptacles.
- Students should leave the Beach Café space they use as clean as, or cleaner than, they found it.
Food & Beverages
- Students are permitted to bring light snacks and covered beverages into the Beach Café.
- Students may not use the Beach Café’s cafeteria appliances (e.g., stoves, warmers) unless they have been specifically authorized. Students can request such authorization by emailing the Administrative Director of Student Affairs or the Executive Assistant to the DHS Chair.
- Students are permitted to use microwaves provided that they clean the microwave areas after their use.
Safety Requirements
- Students are prohibited from accessing Beach Café kitchen areas, storage rooms, or staff-only spaces.
- Students must not unplug, alter, or modify Dining Services equipment.
- Students must not obstruct Beach Café exits.
Closing & Check-Out
Before leaving the Beach Café, Students must:
- Turn off lights, if applicable.
- Ensure all doors close and lock properly.
- Remove all personal belongings.
- Complete any required program-specific checkout process, if applicable.
Consequences for Non-Compliance
Failure to comply with this Policy may result in revocation of a Student’s After-Hours Beach Café access or referral to Student Affairs or other appropriate University offices for further action.
Definitions
After-Hours: Any time outside of the Beach Café Normal Operating Hours.
Normal Operating Hours: The hours of the Beach Café’s regular dining operations; 7AM-3PM, Monday-Friday, or such other time as may be established by the Beach Café as part of routine operations.
