School of Nursing: Procedure for Academic Planning And Implementation

Title

School of Nursing: Procedure for Academic Planning And Implementation

Introduction

Purpose

To provide guidance on the annual process used for planning and implementing academic programs.

Scope of Applicability

All academic programs in the School of Nursing.

Procedure

See Attachment : SON Office of Academic Affairs Workflow

Introduction

The OAA Workflow document identifies the steps in the School of Nursing program planning and implementation process. The Teaching and Assignment Management System (TAMS) with faculty assignments also documented in TAMS.

Course Map

Policy

In consultation with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Associate Deans for each program develop the course map for the program for which they are responsible. The course map identifies all SON course offerings for the present academic year and upcoming academic year. Electives for the next AY will be confirmed annually in the fall semester.

Procedure

  1. Academic Associate Deans propose course offerings based upon the faculty-approved curricula, projected fiscal resources and interdisciplinary offerings.
  2. The course map for the current AY is finalized at the Fall Academic Associate Dean meeting
  3. The course map, to include potential elective course offerings, is shared with the program executive committees for input/corrections/suggestions.
  4. Faculty and students will be informed when the course map is posted and/or updated on the SON website (https://nursing.unc.edu). A disclaimer on the document will indicate that "this is a long-range planning document, and course scheduling by semester may sometimes vary based on resource availability or unanticipated program changes. Faculty and students will be advised to check periodically for updates to the document."

Course Schedule

Policy

Using the Course Map, the Academic Associate Deans develop the Course Schedule (course list and class schedule) for the current year. To assure that all involved constituencies have input into the Course Schedule, it will be developed collaboratively with adequate time for feedback. The Course Schedule includes the times that all SON courses will be offered during the current year, room assignments and responsible faculty. The Course Schedule will be published each semester: Oct 15 (spring), March 15 (summer-fall). Requests for classrooms will be submitted to the office of Administrative Services in accordance with the Policy for Classroom Scheduling for Institutional Needs.

Procedure

See the SON OAA Workflow document (attached)

Late revisions, when necessary due to unforeseen circumstances, are shared faculty and students via the website when approved by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Course and Clinical Rotation Schedule via TAMS

Policy

TAMS is the system of record that provides information on faculty assignments for all courses at all program levels. Associate Deans, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Associate Dean for Administration and the Dean all have the ability to review and provide input to TAMS.

Procedure

  1. Teaching preferences will be submitted annually in late January/early February by all faculty via TAMS.
  2. The Academic Associate Deans and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will meet to discuss faculty requests, course needs, and any other information that would be helpful to the faculty assignment process. Input about elective courses to be offered each year will be sought from the AAPC during their Fall Semester meeting.

Faculty Responsibility and Preferences

Policy

Faculty will submit their preferences for courses they would like to teach during the next Academic Year via TAMS in late January/early February each year. While all efforts will be made to support individual preferences, the needs of the School of Nursing to provide for the education of students will take priority over individual needs.

Procedure

  1. The opportunity for faculty to submit teaching preferences for the upcoming year via TAMS will be announced.
  2. The Academic Associate Deans will then each populate faculty into the identified courses within their respective academic program. At the March Academic Associate Dean meeting, the Academic Associate Deans will meet as a group and discuss any un-met teaching needs and determine which faculty member can best meet this need. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs will provide leadership for conflict resolution about faculty assignments.
  3. The Associate Dean for Administration will ensure that all Administrative and Research buy-outs are correctly inserted into TAMS and will also provide each Associate Dean with information regarding financials.
  4. At the time of the Annual Evaluation, the Academic Associate Dean will provide the faculty member with their teaching assignments and proposed course times for the next AY. These contracts may be changed during the year to reflect changing faculty roles.
