Title
College of Arts and Sciences: Linguistics Policy on Faculty Salary Increases
Introduction
Purpose
The purpose of this document is to outline how the Department of Linguistics determines faculty salary increases, including the factors considered, the roles of relevant committees, and the procedures for merit and equity adjustments.
Scope
This policy applies to faculty in the Department of Linguistics within the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ("UNC-Chapel Hill".
Policy
The department chair is responsible for making salary increase recommendations, as guided by regulations and instructions from the dean. In recommending merit salary increases to the dean, the chair will be advised by the department salary committee, which will take into account the following factors (the order of listing is not a ranking of relative importance):
- Teaching
- Scholarship (publications & oral presentations)
- Direction of dissertations and theses/mentoring
- Equity adjustments (subject to available funds)
- Outside offers (when applicable)
- Service
In assessing these factors, equal weight will be given to teaching and scholarship, somewhat less to direction of dissertations and theses and service. In the area of scholarship, publications will count more heavily than oral presentations. In all of these areas, the chair will consider both recent performance (as reflected in the last annual report) and each individual’s overall tenure. In years in which no raises have been given in the previous year, performance will be considered going back to the previous merit increase.
Special equity adjustments will be made when funds are available. There is a formal salary review committee, comprised of at least three faculty, of whom at least two are full professors and one is the department Diversity Liaison. This committee is advisory to the chair, who serves ex officio. The chair will consult with the Linguistics Advisory Committee (LAC) in the case of considering a special increase to respond to an outside offer.
Raises awarded for promotions are set by the College of Arts and Sciences and are given independently of merit increases.
This policy will be reviewed every five years or upon request of a faculty member.
