School of Medicine: Policy on Dissemination of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine Competencies and Enabling Competencies

Introduction

Purpose

This Policy establishes the mechanisms by which students, faculty, preceptors, fellows and residents learn about the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ("UNC-Chapel Hill" or "University") School of Medicine's ("SOM") competencies, enabling competencies and learning objectives for each required learning experience.

Scope

This Policy applies to all faculty and staff in the SOM responsible for dissemination of competencies, enabling competencies and learning objectives and to all faculty, staff, preceptors, fellows and residents requiring access to competencies, enabling competencies and learning objectives.

Policy Statement

This Policy outlines the SOM requirements to ensure that all medical students, faculty, preceptors, fellows and residents are made aware of the SOM competencies and enabling competencies, and the learning objectives for the specific courses and clerkships that are a part of the medical student education requirements and where faculty and others will serve as instructors and evaluators.

Medical students are required to review and acknowledge SOM’s competencies and enabling competencies on an annual basis via Canvas, the SOM’s adopted learning management system,  at the same time they review and acknowledge SOM’s technical standards.

On an annual basis, clinical faculty, preceptors and residents are required to review and acknowledge SOM’s competencies, enabling competencies, and learning objectives, as well as commit to creating a positive learning environment, via an electronic platform.

SOM further disseminates its competencies, enabling competencies, and learning objectives according to the structures of the Foundation, Application and Individualization Phases of the curriculum as specified in the School of Medicine: Procedure, Dissemination of Competencies and Enabling Competencies.

Definitions

Foundation Phase: The first eighteen (18) months of the medical school curriculum comprised of:

  • Nine (9) Medical Science courses (three per semester)
  • Three (3) semesters of Patient Centered Care (PCC)
  • Three (3) semesters of Social and Health Systems (SHS)

Application Phase: The 12-month phase of the medical school curriculum dedicated to core clinical experiences, beginning in March  and ending in February of the following, year consisting of:

  • Three (3) clinical courses:
    • Care of Specific Populations
    • Community Based Longitudinal Care
    • Hospital, Interventional, and Surgical Care
  • One (1) longitudinal course:
    • Social and Health Systems 4

Individualization Phase: The final (fourteen) 14 months of the medical school curriculum dedicated to the completion of graduation requirements and electives tailored to a student’s career interest, beginning in March and ending in May of the following year consisting of:

  • Two (2) Acting Internships
  • One (1) Critical Care Selective
  • One (1) Advanced Clinical Selective
  • Four (4) Electives
  • Two (2) longitudinal courses:
    • Science of Medicine and Social and Health Systems 5
    • Transition to Residency (to be completed at the end of the phase
