Unit Procedure
Title
School of Nursing: Workstation Imaging Procedure
Introduction
Purpose
This procedure outlines the imaging process for both University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing (SON) Faculty and Staff computers, as well as SON classroom and podium computers.
Scope
This procedure applies to all SON provisioned workstations, such as laptops and desktops, used by faculty, staff, and classrooms.
Procedure
The imaging process for both user and classroom computers is the same, however the post-configuration processes are different. Each process is outlined below.
Faculty/Staff Workstation Imaging Process
These computers only differ regarding the hardware-specific drivers that get installed, as well as the post configuration scripts that only classroom computers receive. To image a SON computer:
- Plug in a USB drive with the CCI Image Ultra Boot Disc installed on it.
- Note that these should be updated every semester. This may be done by redownloading the ISO and installing it on a drive with a utility such as Rufus.
- Connect the computer to the wired ethernet and boot it from the USB drive.
- Proceed through the Configuration Manager prompts, selecting the Windows 11 CCI image when prompted. Accept all defaults until shown a screen with multiple radio buttons.
- When shown a screen with the options ‘Student’, ‘Staff’, and ‘Faculty’, select the ‘Faculty’ option and then continue accepting default prompts.
- Upon completion of imaging, a window will show with the options ‘Shut down’ or ‘Restart’. Select ‘Restart’ to finalize the imaging process.
- Upon rebooting, a Windows first-time setup screen will show. Proceed through the screens, accepting default options.
- When prompted to log in with an account, enter ‘SON_Admin.svc’ and enter the official password.
- Note that this account will be disabled upon joining the domain.
- After finishing the first-time setup, the Windows desktop will show. Immediately run Windows Updates, and when completed, run Lenovo System Update. Accept all Critical and recommended updates within System Update.
- Plug in one of the SON IIT Imaging Apps USB drives.
- Run “FIRST_RUNALL.bat” as an administrator.
- Close the Ninite Window when complete.
- When prompted, enter L or D if the computer is a laptop or Desktop, respectively.
- Reboot the computer when FIRST_RUNALL has completed.
- After rebooting, run “SECOND_JoinDomain.bat”.
- Enter your ADM credentials when prompted. If successfully joined, reboot the computer.
Faculty/Staff Workstation Post-configuration Process
All Faculty and Staff computers remain unchanged following the imaging process, and sit in secure storage until they are assigned to a new user. Upon assignment, the following steps must be followed:
- If more than one month has passed since imaging, log in via an ADM account and run Windows and System Updates.
- Update the Computer’s AD object with the assignee’s name in the Description field.
- Check out the computer to the assignee in BlueTally.
- Add the assignee’s Onyen via lusrmgr.msc, within the Groups\Users section.
- Return the machine to secure storage until a meeting is coordinated with the assignee.
- During that meeting, the user will log into the computer, configure Bitlocker including a PIN, and set up Eduroam.
- Work with the user to assist with any additional software requests or questions they have.
Classroom Computer Post-configuration Process
Classroom computers in the SON have unique configurations designed for quick and intuitive use during lectures and presentations. The imaging and configuration process for this is below.
All necessary files will be stored in the main SON IIT imaging repository alongside the aforementioned core postconfig scripts in the 'Classrooms' folder. These files are stored on the SON IIT Support Applications channel within the ‘ImagingApps’ folder.
- After joining the domain, add the computer to the 'Kiosk' OU and then add it to the 'SON_Kiosk Computers' security group.
- Run the 'AddSONClassroom.bat' file to add ad\son_classroom.svc to the users and administrators list, then run 'AutoAdminLogon.reg' to configure the automatic login. Reboot the computer.
- Install LogiPresentation, Rainmeter, and Reader. Install the .rmskin file that's in the same repository.
- Copy 'Caffeine64.exe', then hit winkey+r, then type 'shell:startup'. Paste Caffeine64.exe in that folder, where you should also see Rainmeter.
- Right-click the 'Wallpaper-01.png' file and make it the desktop background.
- Right click on the Firefox rainmeter link and open the folder, open the .ini file, and remove '(x86)' from the path so that it is only \program files\. Do the same for Chrome.
- Install PollEverywhere using Pollev.exe.
- Install SAS and ensure that the sid.txt file is updated.
- Install DeepFreeze, then use ctrl+alt+shift+F6 to log in, activate, and thaw it.
- Run gpupdate /force
- Ensure all final configurations are made, including:
- Run Winword and ensure that son_classroom.svc@ad.unc.edu is logged in.
- Open Chrome, Firefox and Edge and go through all prompts.
- On the bottom right, open the notification center and clear all notifications.
- Open Task Manager and go to the startup tab—Disable Teams from automatically starting.
- Right-click on the desktop, then go to 'View,' and uncheck 'Show Desktop Icons.'
Exceptions
- MacOS. Please see SON IIT for further information.
