Offices of Medical Student Education: Policy on Individualization Phase Committee Structure and Function

Introduction

Purpose

This Policy establishes the charge, composition and voting privileges of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ("University") School of Medicine ("SOM") Medical Doctorate ("MD") degree program's ("Program") Individualization Phase Committee ("IPC").

Scope

This Policy is applicable to Program faculty, staff and associated Phase Committee and Education Committee members responsible for and participating in review and evaluation initiatives for the Individualization Phase.

Policy

Policy Statement

The charge of the IPC is to monitor, evaluate, and modify operations and policies for the Individualization Phase to achieve Program competencies. The Director of the Individualization Phase is responsible for ensuring the seamless conduct of the IPC's administrative functions.

General Requirements

A Quorum must be present (i.e., in attendance either in-person or virtually) at an IPC meeting in order for the IPC to conduct committee business, (e.g., votes on particular issues, etc.). If an IPC member holds two (2) positions on the committee with voting privileges, the IPC member may only vote once on a given issue.

Membership and Composition

The IPC shall be comprised of the following members:

  • Charlotte Campus Director + a Charlotte Campus faculty member (n = 2)
  • Wilmington Campus Director + a Wilmington Campus faculty member (n = 2)
  • Greensboro Site Director + a Greensboro Site faculty member (n = 2)
  • Raleigh Site Director + a Raleigh Site faculty member (n = 2)
  • Acting Internship Director (n = 1)
  • Critical Care Director (n = 1)
  • Social and Health Systems 5 Director (n = 1)
  • Science of Medicine Director (n = 1)
  • Transition to Residency Director (n = 1)
  • Electives Director (n = 1)
  • Neurology Director (n = 1)
  • Student Representatives (n = 2 SOM Student Government Individualization Phase Officers)

Definitions

Phase Committees: The three (3) standing curricular committees that represent the three phases of the TEC curriculum – Foundation Phase, Application Phase, and Individualization Phase, all of which report directly to the Education Committee.

Quorum: For the purposes of this Policy, a Quorum (i) is defined as fifty percent (50%) of the IPC members plus one (1) additional member and (ii) must include all voting members of the IPC or their designees.

Individualization Phase: The final thirteen (13) months of the Program’s curriculum dedicated to the completion of graduation requirements and electives tailored to a Student’s career interest, beginning in April and ending in April of the following year consisting of:

  • Two (2) Acting Internships
  • One (1) Critical Care Selective
  • One (1) two-week Neurology Selective
  • Three (3) Electives
  • Two (2) Longitudinal Courses:
    • Science of Medicine
    • Social and Health Systems 5
  • Transition to Residency (to be completed at the end of the phase)
