Title

Eshelman School of Pharmacy: Policy on Intended Utilization of Assessment Blocks

Introduction

Purpose

This policy sets out how assessment blocks in the PharmD curriculum are to be used, emphasizing that they are reserved for exams and other high-stakes assessments, with limited exceptions requiring prior approval. It also aims to support a fair, consistent, and well-coordinated assessment schedule that protects instructional time and student learning.

Scope

This policy applies to PharmD course directors and others responsible for scheduling assessments within the Eshelman School of Pharmacy PharmD curriculum, including coordination with the Registrar and approval from the Assistant Dean for PharmD Didactic Curriculum where needed.

Policy

The PharmD curriculum is designed with a holistic approach to education, emphasizing not only the acquisition of knowledge but also the assessment of understanding and competencies. A current component of this design is the assessment blocks scheduled within our course timetable. Recent observations have indicated a significant growth in the types of activities placed within assessment blocks and a deviation from the intended use of these blocks.

Purpose of Assessment Blocks

Assessment blocks are allocated times within our weekly schedule specifically set aside for conducting examinations or other high stakes assessments. These blocks are intended to:

  • Provide a structured, predictable timeframe for students to prepare for and undertake exams and other high stakes assessments.
  • Ensure a consistent and fair assessment environment across the PharmD program.
  • Minimize scheduling conflicts and maximize instructional time outside of assessment periods.
  • Minimize student distraction during class or a reduction in attendance due to exam preparation.

Guidance on the Use of Assessment Blocks

1. Utilization for Exams or Other High Stakes Assessments Only

  • Assessment blocks should exclusively be used for administering exams or other high stakes assessments. They should not be used for lectures, team meetings, review sessions, quizzes, or any other instructional activities. NOTE: Assessments during scheduled course time count towards the credit allotted credit hour limit of the course. Assessments during examination blocks do not count toward the allotted credit hour limit of the course.

2. Final Exam Scheduling

  • Relatedly, the final examination for each course should be scheduled as the last activity of the semester. This placement is crucial for several reasons:
    • It allows students to focus on integrating and applying their cumulative knowledge from the course.
    • It prevents premature closure of instructional periods and ensures that learning objectives are fully addressed before assessment.
    • It aligns with academic standards and expectations regarding course structure and evaluation.

3. Compliance and Coordination

  • Course directors are expected to closely adhere to the designated use of assessment blocks as outlined. Any extending circumstance requiring deviation must be preapproved by the Associate Dean of Professional Education, ensuring it is justified and does not negatively impact the student learning experience.
  • Coordination with the Registrar is essential to avoid overlapping exams and to ensure equitable distribution of assessment periods throughout the semester.

4. Simulated Assessments and Other High Stakes Assessments (With Prior Approval)

  • Assessment blocks may be used for simulated assessments (e.g., SBAR) or other high stakes assessments. NOTE: Assessments during scheduled course time count towards the credit allotted credit hour limit of the course. Assessments during assessment blocks do not count toward the allotted credit hour limit of the course.

Implementation and Monitoring

  • When planning your course, please integrate the assessment blocks according to this guidance. Early identification of assessment dates and clear communication with the Registrar are imperative.
  • Refer to the academic calendar and weekly course schedule for the scheduling of assessment blocks and finals weeks and ensure that your course's final exam is appropriately placed.
  • The Associate Dean of Professional Education will monitor the use of assessment blocks through course schedules and feedback from students, faculty, and the Registrar. Non-compliance or issues identified will be discussed directly with the course director(s) involved.

The integrity of the PharmD program and the assessment process is paramount. By adhering to the guidelines outlined in this document, we uphold our commitment to a fair, consistent, and high-quality educational experience for our students.
