Eshelman School of Pharmacy: HBCU Scholarship Process

Introduction

Purpose

This document outlines the standardized process for reviewing, evaluating, and awarding the Burroughs Wellcome/ESOP HBCU Scholarship, including eligibility identification, assessment criteria, financial need evaluation, and award determination. It is intended to ensure a fair, consistent, and transparent scholarship selection process.

Scope

These work instructions apply to staff involved in administering, reviewing, scoring, and approving the Burroughs Wellcome/ESOP HBCU Scholarship, including the MPS team, Program Director, and Financial Aid Office.

HBCU Scholarship Process

1. Post-Application Review

  • After the application window closes, eligible students for the Burroughs Wellcome/ESOP HBCU Scholarship will be identified based on the educational history section of their application.

  • Qualified applicants will be compiled into an Excel spreadsheet for evaluation.

2. Scholarship Evaluation Criteria

Applicants will be assessed using a standardized scholarship rubric based on the following criteria:

  • North Carolina Residency
  • Financial Need
  • Program Fit, including:
    • Relevance of science degree
    • GPA
    • Research/industry experience

Note: A detailed scoring system is used to ensure consistency and fairness in evaluation.

3. Student Requirements

To be considered for the HBCU scholarship:

  • Students are asked to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Note: When communicating to students that when applying for FASFA, the application is for the CURRENT academic school year.
  • Indicate whether they plan to enroll full-time or part-time
  • Participate in an interview process, if necessary

4. Financial Needs Assessment

  • A needs assessment will be requested from the Financial Aid Office for all qualifying students. Note: The Financial Aid Office needs two week’s advance notice to provide this report.
  • This assessment provides the MPS team with insight into each student’s financial situation and helps determine the level of tuition needed based on a scale from 0-3. Note: Students that do not complete the FAFSA will receive a score of 0 for financial need.

5. Scoring and Review Process

  • All eligible students will be entered into the MPS HBCU Scholarship Rubric to determine their score.

  • At a minimum, the scores will be reviewed by the Program Director, but others may also be included in the review process.

6. Award Determination

  • Based on the rubric score and the available funding for the semester, students will be awarded either:
    • A full scholarship, or
    • A partial scholarship
