This policy is intended to define, encourage, and measure teaching in a way that is consistent with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s mission and complies with UNC System Policy 400.3.1 and its implementing regulation 400.3.1.1[R]. This policy also provides recommendations for Units to establish their own guidelines for teaching effectiveness.
Only current graduate or undergraduate students can be nominated as an instructor or in any other instructional support position, such as a grader. Units may not appoint anyone else into these positions. If a graduate student is to be graduated in May, he or she must be appointed as a visiting faculty member, following the appropriate procedures and conforming to the academic credentials required in a particular college or school.
This policy has three main goals: (1) To meet the needs of our students and other stakeholders; (2) To facilitate transparency and accountability about our performance to the public, and (3) To establish clear and equitable expectations and guidelines about the distribution of work among faculty members.
