University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Procedure for Periodic Review of Vice Chancellors

Introduction

Purpose

This procedure outlines the process for the Chancellor’s periodic review of Vice Chancellors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ("University").

Scope

This procedure applies to University employees in a Vice Chancellor appointment.

Procedure

The Chancellor or designee will conduct periodic comprehensive reviews of University Vice Chancellors to assess unit leadership and programs.

Timing

The Chancellor or designee will typically conduct reviews in intervals of no more than two years from the initial appointment or the date of the last review. The Chancellor may waive, delay, or accelerate reviews at their discretion for good cause.

Review Process

The Chancellor or designee will initiate the review by notifying the Vice Chancellor under review and announcing the review to other executive officers. The Chancellor or designee will determine the process and mechanisms to employ for a fair and thorough review that may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Appointing a review team to gather relevant information;
  • Employing a survey to solicit input from relevant peers, direct reports, and clientele groups;
  • Conducting interviews or workshops to solicit input from relevant individuals or groups; and/or
  • Reviewing metrics and data relevant to the Vice Chancellor's performance.

To the extent practicable, the Chancellor should apply the elements of the review process consistently to all applicable employees.

Written Evaluation

The Chancellor or designee will review and consider all relevant information and complete a written evaluation of the Vice Chancellor’s performance. The Chancellor or designee will share the results with the Vice Chancellor under review and will use the most recent written evaluation as a foundation for the annual performance appraisal process.
