Insurance coverage for rental vehicles is provided by the University's automobile insurance which is part of a master policy issued to The State of North Carolina. We are required to comply with all state policies regarding insurance and rental vehicle use.

Employees that rent vehicles for official University business do not need to acquire or purchase additional automobile insurance. Rather, the University's existing automobile insurance policy automatically provides both liability and physical damage insurance for these vehicles.

All University-owned vehicles, trailers and mobile equipment are covered under the master insurance policy of the state of North Carolina. Certain insurance coverage is automatically placed while other coverages must be specifically requested. Campus departments should contact Risk Management Services to assure all the necessary insurance coverage is in place for their vehicles.

The purpose of this general order (G.O.) is to provide members of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) Police Department with rules for the use of bicycles, motorized two-wheeled vehicles, skateboards, and in-line skates on campus in order to protect against accidents involving pedestrians and to provide rules for securing and storage of bicycles and motorized two-wheeled vehicles.

Immediately notify Risk Management Services of all automobile accidents or damage involving University-owned, NC Motor Fleet Management, or personal vehicles being used for official state business.

For all accidents or damage involving a University-owned vehicle or mobile equipment, a vehicle leased from Motor Fleet Management, or a rental or personal vehicle being used for University business, complete an Automobile Loss Notice and submit to Risk Management Services within 24 hours of the loss.
