This policy is to ensure UNC employee safety during welding and cutting operations along with the protection of property (including equipment) from Hot Work operations conducted at the University. Hot Work is defined as “work involving burning, welding, or similar operation that is capable of initiating fires or explosions.”

Although risk of laboratory infection from working with cell cultures in general is low, risk increases when working with human and other primate cells, and primary cells from other mammalian species. There are reports of infection of laboratory workers handling primary rhesus monkey kidney cells, and the bloodborne pathogen risks from working with primary human cells, tissues and body fluids are widely recognized.

The purpose of paid leave is to maintain employee income, not enhance it. If employees work additional hours outside their normal schedule in a workweek in which they also have scheduled or taken time off, the additional time worked “offsets” the time that the employee intended to cover with available leave or paid time off. The following process should be followed in determining the use of paid leave and paid time off for the workweek.

Salary caps, generally seen with Public Health Service funding, limit the amount of funding the agency will provide for an individual’s salary. The current NIH salary cap amount is reviewed annually.
