This Policy establishes institutional requirements for course syllabi and instructional documentation for credit-bearing courses at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

This memorandum is intended to document the existing policies and procedures for determining the credit hours awarded for all courses and programs, regardless of academic level, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill adopted the Federal Definition of the Credit Hour at the Faculty Council meeting on February 10, 2012.

This document lays out policies, defines various forms of independent study, and establishes guidelines for independent study courses. The purpose of this document is to promote careful planning, consistent expectations, and appropriate oversight for independent study courses.
