Introduction

Purpose

To establish the scope and purpose of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (“University”) School of Medicine (SOM) Medical Doctorate degree (MD) program’s (“Program”) Educational Policies.

Scope

This Policy applies to the Program’s students ("Students"), staff (“Staff”), and faculty ("Faculty") in all Phases of the Program’s curriculum and at all regional campuses/sites.

Policy

Policy Statement

Per the SOM Constitution and Bylaws, the Education Committee is the designated authority for the Program’s curriculum. Where an Educational Policy conflicts with other Program materials, documents, or statements of policy, the Educational Policy will control and take precedence. The Educational Policies are intended to and will always be interpreted consistent with applicable Superior Authority. In the event that an Educational Policy conflicts with a Superior Authority, the Superior Authority will control and take precedence.

Definitions

Educational Policies: Offices of Medical Student Education (OMSE) policies that govern the design, delivery, assessment, and oversight of the Program.

Superior Authority: Refers to any binding law, regulation, policy, procedure, standard, or directive established by a governing body with authority over the Program or by an accrediting body with authority over the Program’s accreditation(s). Such bodies include, but are not limited to, the SOM, the University, the University of North Carolina System, the State of North Carolina, the United States federal government, and/or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
