This policy applies to faculty, students, and staff at the UNC School of Law.
Policy
Policy Statement
- The University of North Carolina School of Law (SOL) is committed to the principles of free inquiry and expression. Vigorous discussion and debate are fundamental to this commitment.
- Faculty, students, and staff have the right to communicate ideas that may be controversial or unpopular, including through robust debate, demonstrations, or protests.
- Although some expression and inquiry may be offensive, the offensiveness of expression or inquiry, standing alone, is not sufficient for the conduct to constitute prohibited harassment or discrimination.
- The right to free expression does not protect:
- conduct that substantially interferes with the carrying out of SOL functions or approved activities, such as classes, meetings, library services, interviews, ceremonies, and public events.
- expression that violates the law, falsely defames a specific individual, constitutes a genuine threat or harassment, or unjustifiably invades substantial privacy or confidentiality interests.
- The SOL may reasonably regulate the time, place, and manner of expression.
- Except when officially authorized, a faculty member should not represent himself or herself as a spokesman for the University.
