Requirements for Newspaper Racks

Newspapers and magazines must be contained in distribution racks.

Racks must be enclosed with a self-closing door. Open boxes, open racks or other open containers are not permitted.

Racks must meet the University's standard as to size and color and must be maintained in good condition. Failure to comply could result in cancellation of approval for use of distribution racks on campus.

Newspaper Rack Location

Newspaper and magazine distribution racks are currently located in the following locations:

  • Y-Court
  • Pit area - Under porch of Student Union
  • Sitterson Hall - within Brick Wall Enclosure at North West Corner of Building
  • North end of the Law School Addition

Adding a rack to these locations requires written permission from the Grounds Director.

Newspaper and magazine distribution racks placed anywhere on campus without written approval may be removed by the Director of the Grounds Services Department without notice.

Distributor Responsibility for Newspaper Racks

Each distributor must service his/her racks and the surrounding area at least daily and more often if necessary to keep the area clear and free of litter from the racks. Recurring problems could result in the removal of the racks without notice.

Each distributor must furnish the Director of the Grounds Services Department the name, address and phone number of the person responsible for his/her racks.

Newspaper Racks for University Publications

The Daily Tar Heel and The Phoenix may be placed in other outdoor locations provided the written approval of the location is obtained from the Director of the Grounds Services Department in advance of placement.

The Director of the Grounds Services Department will include the same considerations in making decision as noted above.
