Carolina Housing: Live On-Campus Requirement

Introduction

Purpose

Scope

Policy

Because of the educational benefits and campus connections created by living on campus, first-year students at UNC-Chapel Hill are required to live in on-campus residence halls or at Granville Towers during the entirety of their first academic year. Summer residency does not factor into the completion of this requirement.

Students who live in on-campus residence halls will be assigned to a designated First Year Experience community or in one of the Residential Learning Programs. A limited number of first-year students will be allowed to live in other University housing as deemed appropriate at the discretion of the Executive Director of Carolina Housing with approval of the Senior Student Affairs Officer. At Granville Towers, students will be assigned to First Year Experience floors located in each of the three towers.

The only exceptions to this policy are for a student who:

  • is 21 years old prior to the first day of classes for the Fall term of their first year (as specified in the Academic Calendar)
  • is under the age of seventeen (17) prior to the first day of classes for the Fall term of their first year (as specified in the Academic Calendar) and they are living within commuting distance (roughly 30 miles) with parents and/or family members.
  • is living with a spouse/partner and/or children
  • is military veteran with at least two years of prior active service
  • has a hardship that requires specialized living accommodations not available in on-campus residence halls or at Granville Towers.

A student applying for a waiver of this requirement must meet the following conditions:

  • Fall under one or more of the exemption categories listed above.
  • Have an active housing application on file for the academic year in which the waiver is being sought, either with Carolina Housing or Granville Towers.
  • Submit a Residency Requirement Waiver Form (found on the Carolina Housing website).
  • Provide requisite information and documentation in support of the request.
