• Graduate student awards and fellowships are a vital component of the UNC-Chapel Hill Eshelman School of Pharmacy's overall strategy for maintaining a highly competitive graduate program in the pharmaceutical sciences. Therefore, students are expected to pursue external funding to help support the cost of their training.  Competitive external student awards and fellowships expand opportunities for all students in our program, and bring recognition and prestige to the awardee as well as the School.  As such, all American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE) Fellowships will be allocated according to the School's award guidelines.
• The School recommends that funds be allocated accordingly:
  1. $2,000.00 towards non-stipend expenditures (supplies towards laboratory rotations, laptop computer, books and other materials, travel, membership fees, etc.) for professional development.
  2. $8,000.00 towards the student’s stipend.
• The Awardee and the awardee’s adviser should provide a proposed budget for some portion of the non-stipend component of the award ($2,000) to the Office of Student Affairs by the end of the first week of classes for Fall and Spring semesters of the award year.  The awardee will be issued a sub-account number and be responsible for maintaining an exact accounting of the use of these funds. Receipts for non-stipend expenditures will be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs. Any unused portion of the non-stipend component in excess of $100 is returned to AFPE.
• Note:  If a student possesses additional funding sources and the $8.000 application of the stipend surpasses the base stipend ($35,000), the difference, the "additional" funds may also be applied toward non-stipend expenditures. This is the only instance where a student may have access to a non-stipend amount of more than $2,000.
• Awardees and their advisors should plan the use of the $2,000 non-stipend funds strategically, as these funds, or some portion, may be carried over for another year with a request for a "No-Cost Extension" to the AFPE.

SPECIAL NOTES

1. Students who are members of the Kappa Epsilon Fraternity should submit separate applications for both the general AFPE Pre-Doctoral Fellowship as well as for any other AFPE fellowship they qualify for to increase their chances of receiving an award.
2. Letters of recommendation should be provided by faculty who are most familiar with the described research, and should contain statements regarding the leadership qualities of the applicant - either demonstrated through their co-curricular activities or observed during their training program.
