Introduction

Purpose

This policy document outlines the guidelines and parameters for how the UNC Chapel Hill School of Government recognizes and celebrates employees who are retiring or leaving the organization. It defines eligibility criteria based on years of service and specifies the types of events, gifts, and budget allocations provided in each circumstance.

Scope

This policy applies to SOG faculty and staff.

Policy

Retirement events for employees with at least 10 years of service at the SOG

SOG faculty or staff who are retiring with at least 10 years of service at the SOG may receive an all-School retirement event within the guidelines described below.

A retiree in this category may alternatively choose to have a farewell dinner or lunch funded by the School at up to $75/person for dinner or $50/person for lunch to a maximum of twenty guests and $1,500. (Certificate, gift, and engraved brick described for the all-School retirement event are also included.)

All-School Retirement event parameters:

  • General budget allotted for School of Government retirement events: up to $3,000 for catering and decorations plus KSD parking for outside guests.
  • A committee of SOG employees will plan the retirement event.
  • A certificate will be written and framed for the retiree and presented by the Dean.
  • An engraved brick will be presented to each retiree at the celebration event and placed in the sidewalk between the parking deck and the Knapp-Sanders Building. The retirement event committee will suggest text for the brick, and may solicit suggestions from the retiree. All brick text must be approved by the Senior Associate Dean.
  • Retirees in this category will receive a $300 gift card from the SOG (this is above and beyond the event budget). This gift is viewed by the IRS as income and will be subject to income tax.

Farewell events for employees leaving, but not retiring, with at least 10 years of service at the SOG and for employees retiring from state service with at least five years of service at the SOG

SOG faculty or staff who are leaving employment before retirement with 10 or more years of service at the SOG will be honored with a small SOG Logo gift and up to $500 is allotted for an all-School farewell snacks/party/lunch.

SOG faculty or staff retiring from state service with at least five years of service at the SOG are eligible for a Farewell Event like that described in the paragraph above.
