College of Arts and Sciences: APS Adjunct Appointment Guidelines
Introduction
Purpose
The Department of Applied Physical Sciences strives to establish a community of scholars throughout the university while retaining a core sense of mission and scholarship. For these reasons, adjunct appointments should be intentional and considered in terms of mutual benefit for the scholar and the department.

Policy
Policy Statement
Appointments are for three years and acknowledge either extensive engagement in teaching, outstanding service to our department, or the primary research mentorship of an APS student.
Potential appointees linked to instruction are brought to the attention of the Personnel Committee by either the Director of Undergraduate Studies or the Director of Graduate Studies.
Other potential appointees are recommended to the Personnel Committee by a full faculty member. If approved by the Personnel Committee, the candidate is considered by the full faculty.
Graduate committee service from individuals outside the Department need not involve an adjunct appointment. Instead, such service is approved by the Director of Graduate Studies. However, a primary research advisor for an APS graduate student must have at least adjunct status.
An adjunct appointee will have reasonable access to department facilities as agreed on with the Chair of the Department of APS. Consideration may be given to the administration of proposals for grants and contracts through the department by an adjunct appointee only on a co-PI basis with a tenured or tenured-track faculty member acting as a PI.
Adjunct faculty will have access to making offers of acceptance to their research group from our incoming cohort of graduate students at the admission stage after the full faculty have first established contact with the prospective student to determine if a full faculty member is of primary interest. If the prospective student is primarily interested in an adjunct faculty member, and is interested in an APS graduate degree, due consideration will be given upon the signing of the Declaration of Graduate Thesis Advisor.
Adjunct faculty can participate in faculty meetings, but they are not eligible to vote.
