Introduction

Purpose

This Policy establishes the charge, composition and voting privileges of the Individualization Phase Committee within the Office of Medical Student Education in the School of Medicine.

Scope

This Policy is applicable to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (“University”) School of Medicine (SOM) faculty, staff and associated phase and education committee members responsible for and participating in review and evaluation initiatives for the Individualization Phase of the Medical Doctorate curriculum and programs.

Policy

Policy Statement

The charge of the Individualization Phase Committee is to monitor, evaluate, and modify operations and policies for the Individualization Phase to achieve School-established competencies. The Co-Directors of the Individualization Phase lead the Individualization Phase Committee. The Individualization Phase is comprised of voting and non-voting members listed below.

General Requirements

  • The Individualization Phase Committee must have a quorum present to meet and conduct committee business. A quorum is defined as 50% plus one of the Individualization Phase Committee members and must include all voting members or their designees.
  • If an Individualization Phase Committee member holds two positions on the committee with voting privileges, the member may only vote once.
  • The Individualization Phase Committee Voting Members hold the following positions:
    1. Phase Co-Directors (2)
    2. Asheville Campus Director + 1
    3. Charlotte Campus Director + 1
    4. Wilmington Campus Director + 1
    5. Greensboro Site Director + 1
    6. Raleigh Site Director + 1
    7. Acting Internship Director
    8. Critical Care Director
    9. Advanced Clinical Selective Director
    10. Social and Health Systems 5 Director
    11. Science of Medicine Director
    12. Transition to Residency Director
    13. Electives Director
    14. Student Representatives (2)
  • The Individualization Phase Committee Non-Voting Members hold the following positions:
  1. Vice Dean for Academic Affairs
  2. Vice Dean for Strategic Initiatives
  3. Associate Dean of Student Affairs
  4. Assistant Deans of Student Affairs (2)
  5. Associate Dean of Admissions
  6. Assistant Dean of Admissions
  7. Associate Dean of Curriculum
  8. Assistant Dean of Preclinical Curriculum
  9. Assistant Dean of Clinical Curriculum
  10. Director of Educational Effectiveness
  11. Senior Associate Dean for Medical Student Education
  12. Director for Community Health Track

Definitions

Individualization Phase: The final fourteen (14) months of the medical school curriculum dedicated to the completion of graduation requirements and electives tailored to a student’s career interest, beginning in March and ending in May of the following year consisting of:

  • Two (2) Acting Internships
  • One (1) Critical Care Selective
  • One (1) Advanced Clinical Selective
  • Four (4) Electives
  • Two (2) Longitudinal Courses:
    • Science of Medicine and Social and Health Systems 5
    • Transition to Residency (to be completed at the end of the phase)
