Department of Family Medicine: Policy on Parental Leave

Introduction

Purpose

To allow appropriate parental leave and departmental planning for such leave within the guidelines set by the School of Medicine by defining the circumstances under which faculty may use parental leave.

Scope

Faculty and Career Development Fellows in the Department of Family Medicine.

Policy

Policy Statement

1. Faculty Parental Leave

Faculty must complete Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) documentation to initiate the request of parental leave.

Faculty are allowed 60 calendar days’ paid leave (must be primary caregiver for infant) as long as faculty did not use any portion of this leave within the prior 52-week period.

Paid leave is to be made up of sick leave days first, followed by vacation leave.

Faculty may be gone for up to 12 weeks. If there is a gap left over once the 60 days, sick leave, and vacation are used, faculty may take unpaid leave for the remaining time.

FMLA lasts 12 weeks while parental leave can go up to 15 weeks and is paid beyond the 60 calendar days disability period to the extent that the faculty uses sick/vacation time for that purpose.

Sick leave and vacation days are paid up front, i.e. in January one may have access to the days allowed for the entire calendar year (January-December).

Faculty are not required to make up their weekly allotment of clinic sessions while they are on leave.

2. Career Development Fellows

Career Development Fellows should complete FMLA documentation to initiate their parental leave request. They may have 12 weeks unpaid leave.
