Title
Department of Ophthalmology: Policy on the Dress Code for Administration Employees
Introduction
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to establish consistent guidelines for professional standards of dress for Department of Ophthalmology administration employees. Ophthalmology administration employees are expected to follow the practice of wearing appropriate business attire during work hours and when engaged in work-related business activities.
Scope
All Department of Ophthalmology administrative staff, including volunteers, temporary staff, and student staff.
Policy
Policy Statement
All administrative staff assigned to the Department of Ophthalmology are responsible for maintaining and wearing clean, neat, non-wrinkled, well-fitting business attire in good condition during assigned work shifts.
- Unacceptable Attire - Examples include, but are not limited, to the following:
- Soiled, wrinkled, or torn clothing
- T-Shirts with writing or decals
- Sweatshirts or jerseys
- Warm-up or jogging suits or sweatpants
- Scrubs
- Backless tops
- Midriff-baring tops
- Tank tops (unless worn under a jacket or shirt and not visible)
- Tops with spaghetti straps (unless worn under a jacket or shirt and not visible)
- Half-shirts or muscle shirts
- Shorts or Bermuda shorts
- Skirts higher than 2 inches above the knee
- Loungewear
- Flip flop shoes of any kind
- Excessively high-heeled shoes
- Ripped, torn, visibly soiled, and/or clothes that include any type of writing other than brand name
- Tight fitting, low-cut, or lycra or spandex clothing
- Exceptions for Tennis Shoes and Denim Jeans
- Tennis shoes may be worn if clean and appropriate for the administrative work and circumstances (check with supervisor for confirmation prior to wearing)
- Denim jeans may be worn on Fridays and other days designated by Department management provided that they are neat in appearance, appropriately tailored and well fitting, including with regards to length, and free of holes, rips, or decals other than brand name or logo.
Violations of this Policy
Violations of this dress code by administrative staff will be reported to direct supervisor and may result in disciplinary actions by the Department
Exceptions
Exceptions to the dress code will be made on a case by case basis for the following reasons:
- Documented medical conditions
- Religious beliefs or considerations
- Written/emailed permission provided by supervisor due to temporary change in duty (e.g., office relocation, etc.)
- As deemed necessary by Department management.
