Department of Emergency Medicine: Policy on Faculty Parental Leave
Introduction
Purpose
The University of North Carolina Department of Emergency Medicine supports faculty as they transition to and return from parental leave by providing lactation facilities and work schedule options.
Scope
All Clinical faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine.
Policy
Policy Statement

A lactation room easily accessible to the Emergency Department with a lactation pump and locking door is available in the Neurosciences Hospital, 3rd floor. A list of other available sites is located at Lactation - University Compliance Office.

Faculty returning from parental leave are eligible for a period of up to 1 year to work only in settings with double coverage (effectively no Hillsborough Hospital (HB) overnight)

Faculty preparing to take parental leave are provided the option of no night shift work during the month prior to the start of their leave. The night shifts missed will be distributed in other months during the same or the next shift block.

Faculty returning from parental leave are provided the option of no night shift work during the first month after returning from parental leave. The night shifts missed will be distributed in the other months during the same or next shift block.

Faculty are provided the option of working half the total number of required shifts for the last month before the beginning of parental leave or for the first month after the end of parental leave. Missed shifts will be distributed equally over the next 6 months after returning from parental leave.
