Introduction

Purpose

To identify the courses required to complete the Individualization Phase and eligibility for graduation starting with the Class of 2027.

Scope

This Policy is applicable to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (University) School of Medicine (SOM) Medical Doctorate Program students beginning with the Class of 2027.

Policy

Policy Statement

MD Program students including transfer students, beginning with the Class of 2027, must complete the following Individualization Phase requirements during the phase, to be eligible for graduation:

  • Two (2) Acting Internship selective (12 credit hours)
  • One (1) Critical Care selective (6 credit hours).
  • One (1) Longitudinal Science of Medicine (3 credit hours).
  • One (1 Longitudinal Social and Health Systems 5 course (3 credit hours).
  • Three (3) electives (18 credit hours)
  • One (1) Transition to Residency course (3 credit hours)
  • One (1) Neurology Selective (2 weeks) (credit hours TBD)
  • One (1) Longitudinal Competency Based Course (credit hours TBD)
  • Completion of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification during medical school

Students are expected to take different courses for each of these experiences. Students are not permitted to repeat a course, except in the case of remediation (prior failure). If a student has extenuating circumstances that require a repeat, student is to submit a request through Student Affairs.

Electives:

During Individualization Phase Selectives: Longitudinal elective course work should not conflict with scheduled responsibilities during Individualization Phase Selectives.
