Introduction

Purpose

To identify the courses required to complete the Individualization Phase to be eligible for graduation for the Classes of 2025 - 2026.

Scope

This Policy is applicable to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (University) School of Medicine (SOM) Medical Doctorate Program students from the Class of 2025 to the Class of 2026.

Policy

Policy Statement

Students, beginning with the Class of 2025 and ending with the Class of 2026, must complete the following Individualization Phase requirements during the phase, totaling 57 credit hours, to be eligible for graduation:

  • Two (2) Acting Internship selectives (12 credit hours)
  • One (1) Critical Care selective (6 credit hours). Note: the Education Committee approved in September 2020 that emergency medicine does not qualify as a Critical Care selective.
  • One (1) Advanced Clinical Selective (6 credit hours)
  • One (1) Longitudinal Science of Medicine (3 credit hours). Note: Education Committee approved the transition to a longitudinal format in February 2020.
  • One (1) Longitudinal Social and Health Systems 5 course (3 credit hours). Note: Education Committee approved the transition to a longitudinal format in February 2020.
  • Four (4) electives (24 credit hours)
  • One (1) Transition to Residency course (3 credit hours)
  • Completion of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification during medical school

Students are expected to take different courses for each of these experiences. Students are not permitted to repeat a course, except in the case of remediation (prior failure). If a student has extenuating circumstances that require a repeat, student submits a request through Student Affairs.

Electives:

During Individualization Phase Selectives: Longitudinal elective course work should not conflict with scheduled responsibilities during Individualization Phase selectives.

During block electives: For 2- and 4-week electives, the longitudinal elective course work may continue but may not conflict with scheduled course time for more than 4 hours for a 2-week elective or 8-hours for a 4- week elective. Missing scheduled 2- and 4-week elective time to work on longitudinal elective work must be approved by the course director.

Definitions

Individualization Phase: The final fourteen (14) months of the medical school curriculum dedicated to the completion of graduation requirements and electives tailored to a student’s career interest, beginning in March and ending in May of the following year consisting of:

  • Two (2) Acting Internships
  • One (1) Critical Care Selective
  • One (1) Advanced Clinical Selective
  • Four (4) Electives
  • Two (2) Longitudinal Courses:
    • Science of Medicine
    • Social and Health Systems 5
  • Transition to Residency (to be completed at the end of the phase)
