Introduction

Purpose

Laurel Archer Copp, former Dean of the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing, has endowed a fund to support an award to stimulate the scholarly writing of nursing faculty. Scholarly writing, for the purpose of this award, is defined as the creative use of words to achieve insight or impact on patient care, teaching, research or service.

Scope 

All faculty in the School of Nursing are eligible.

Standard

Award: Cash award, plus recognition on a plaque for the individual or team plus recognition on a permanent plaque in the School of Nursing, and recognition during a School of Nursing public event.

Award Process:

  1. Each year, the Dean's Office or designee will call for submissions of published scholarly writing for consideration. The call will state eligibility and evaluation criteria
    1. Eligibility criteria
      1. published within the prior two years
      2. SON faculty member is the sole or first author
    2. Evaluation criteria
      1. effectiveness of expression, creativity, literary quality, excitement or energy
      2. stylistic excellence
      3. stimulation of thought or action

 Typical time of year for call: Spring

Reviewers

    1. The Dean’s Office will seek three to five volunteers to review the submissions
    2. Each submission will be reviewed by two reviewers
    3. Reviewers will use the following scale in evaluating the extent to which the submission meets each criterion
      1. Minimally
      2. Mostly
      3. Consistently
    4. Each reviewer will sum their ratings for a total score and submit the total scores to the Dean's Office
    5. The Dean's Office or designee will rank order scores
      1. If a tie occurs, a third review will be solicited from one of the original three to five reviewers
  1. The Dean will announce the recipient at the end of year awards ceremony or the first logical opportunity thereafter
