COVID-19 Community Standards

Description of the current University COVID-19 Community Standards.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill COVID-19 Community Standards

The University COVID-19 Community Standards are:

  • Stay Up to Date with your COVID-19 Vaccines
  • Optional Mask Use
  • Practice Healthy Habits and Be Respectful

Stay Up to Date with Your COVID-19 Vaccines

The best tool against COVID-19 is to stay up to date on your COVID-19 vaccination. Up to date means a person has received all recommended doses in their primary series COVID-19 vaccine, and a booster when eligible.

All members of the UNC-Chapel Hill community can let the University know you have received one or more doses of a COVID-19 vaccine by uploading by uploading proof of vaccination using the COVID-19 Vaccine Certification form. You can also use the COVID-19 Vaccine Certification form to upload information about your COVID-19 booster.

Optional Mask Use

The indoor mask requirement was lifted for most of the campus on March 7, 2022.

Face masks are:

Optional in University buildings, including:

  • Classrooms
  • Residence halls
  • Offices
  • Libraries
  • Athletic venues
  • Performance spaces

Required in:

All health care settings, including:

  • UNC Health
  • Campus Health
  • The University Employee Occupational Health Clinic
  • Carolina Together Testing Center
  • Student Stores Pharmacy and the Carolina Together Vaccination Clinic
  • Any patient clinics on campus

Chapel Hill Transit

University transit, including P2P, Safe Ride and U and RU buses

Research labs will revert to the mask requirements they followed pre-pandemic - masks will only be required in labs where they have always been required.

If you feel more comfortable still wearing a mask, you are free to do so. There are many reasons why a person may decide to continue to wear a mask, and we respect that choice. Conversely, students, faculty and staff should not be penalized if they do not wear a mask in their classroom or office setting where it is now optional.

Practice Healthy Habits and Be Respectful

UNC-Chapel Hill is committed to the well-being of our community - not just physically, but emotionally.

Each time prior to coming to campus, all members of the Carolina community should self-assess whether you are experiencing any symptoms using a COVID-19 symptom list. If you have any of these symptoms, you should stay home. You should not enter any campus building, attend any class or report to work.

Supporting each other assists all members of the Carolina community to do their best work whether it is in the workplace, in the classroom or in the laboratory. It is important to lead conversations and decisions with respect for fellow community members, recognizing that people have different levels of comfort depending on the circumstance.

  • It is important to respect and honor members of the Carolina community who wish to maintain their personal space.
  • Members of the Carolina community are expected to refrain from asking others for their personal health information.
